The “Giva Grass GTI” label was entered into the World Label Award after winning a major prize in last year’s Finat competition, where it received a Highly Commended Diploma. It then went on to win more recognition and the label picked up a 2012 World Label Award within the category Flexo Colour Press.

Axellus won a Highly Commended Diploma in 2011’s Finat competition. The label is produced by Skanem Scandinavia at the site in Hobro, Denmark. The label won a prize in the pharmaceutical category and the jury was very impressed with the quality of the label.

Skanem Moss has developed a new 99mm diameter can to meet market needs. The market trend is showing a shift in requirements within the paint industry specifically from 1L, 1/2L and 1/3L cans to 0,75L cans, which is the size of the new Skanem can. Managing Director in Skanem Moss, Øivind Stahr says: ‘Our new 99mm can holds 0.75L as a standard and is an important and strategic development on site in order to meet market requirements and needs.

Skanem has together with Multinational customer Oriflame developed a “Superpeel” label solution. This is an innovative concept with front and reverse printing on the adhesive side. Only one layer is now required with the option of also having much more information on the product. Oriflame sees this as a major innovation, which allows them to provide a cost effective single variant solution whilst ensuring sufficient regulatory information on products.

A long term contract has been signed between Orkla Brands and Skanem. Skanem now becomes main supplier of self adhesive labels to Orkla’s Nordic portfolio, including Stabburet, Axellus and Procordia brands. Skanem will be delivering up to 200 million labels per year and the agreement represents one of the largest contracts in the Scandinavian region.

To meet customer’s needs of quality labels in shortest possible time, Skanem Hobro in Denmark recently installed a new Gallus 410S. The new machine has a print width of 410mm and can print up to 9 colour and represents a strength for the site’s production and the region’s flexibility!

All four Skanem sites in the UK have been brought into one unit to strengthen Skanem’s position in the UK local market. This will enable Skanem to maximise production efficiencies, marketing efforts and capacity planning in the region. Skanem Hobro has had their digital press installed for 4 years now and the usage and appreciation of the technology internally, and with their customers, is increasing. Skanem Liverpool was recently assessed for compliance to ISO 9001:2000. BSI (The British Standards Institution) did a three day audit where they were unable to find any non-conformances in Skanem Liverpool’s system! As a result Skanem Liverpool is now BSI registered to ISO 9001:2000

Skanem's System division in Sweden has recently developed a new version of the Skanem LaBora, a slimmer construction called Skanem LaBora Slim. The new machine has been developed to enable cost efficient and secure label application, also in limited spaces.

Skanem Skurup demonstrated labelling and sales excellence at this year’s PACK & EMBALLAGE fair in Älvsjö outside of Stockholm! Sales and Marketing Manager in Skanem Skurup, Lasse Larsson can report that the two exhibition days were very successful: ‘We had two fantastic days at the fair! With visitor numbers up from 2007, the quality of the visitors and our leads were very good, and we managed to get some strong sales leads during the two days!

Skanem Newcastle recently won the award for Best Print Process at the tenth Anniversary FlexoTech International Print and Innovation Awards! The prize was won in the ‘Label and Tag (Process)’ category for their Ocean Pure label. Skanem Hobro finished installing their brand new Computer To Plate (CTP) system in February this year, and the site is so far very pleased with the digital artwork processing system. Production Manager in Skanem Hobro, Dan Panduro says: ‘Digital plates give us the opportunity to achieve a better and more constant quality, more so than with the old analogue plates, one of the reasons being the elimination of film in the process. The new imaging system also helps optimise our workflow to reduce origination lead time and increase the efficiency of our studio facilities.

Skanem Newcastle’s studio is continuing to be actively involved in adding value to the customer projects they are working on. Reprographics Manager in Skanem Newcastle, Alan Quinn explains: ’Lately we have really focused on working closely with in particular one of our multinational customers in adding value to their new product developments, and looking at how to enhance current designs. A lot of the projects we are involved in are focused around cost savings by rationalising label sizes to fit both our presses and the application machinery within customer sites. All these types of projects go on within the studio and often never get to the press, but it is an ongoing focus for us, to make sure we are always available for our customers for problem solving and new ideas.

Being part of a Group means all Skanem sites have access to extensive expert knowledge and support from Group managers and staff, as well as access to information on new developments, Skanem’s history within different sectors as well as innovations. Technical Manager for Skanem Group, Alan Hazlewood, works with all sites in the Group, and one of the latest projects has been gathering information and knowledge for an external article set up by Skanem HQ on producing labels for toys, where he worked closely with Prepress Manager in Skanem Hobro A/S, Ebba Jakobsen.

Skanem Cardiff recently went through an audit by one of our major multinational customers and got an impressive score of 94%! The highest score Skanem has ever had for this audit! Norway’s largest label contract was signed last Friday at Skanem’s site in Stavanger, Norway! Managing Director, Kari Nag, headed the tender process and the factory will now be delivering labels to Nortura BA’s entire label portfolio! Kari Nag is extremely pleased with the big win and is now looking forward to working with Nortura BA, Norway’s largest producer of meat, egg and poultry products. Kari Nag says: ‘We think Nortura represents a very exciting customer for us and we are now looking forward to starting production and further develop our relationship in 2008.

Skanem’s new LaBora® machine was first introduced in April 2007 when it was installed at the first customer site. The new machine has since then generated a great deal of interest in the market for label application. Divisional Manager at Skanem System in Linköping, Marcus Persson says: ‘By having this new, flexible machine on offer, we are able to meet customer needs of fast and secure label application in a unique manner. The interest so far has been great and we have already had several enquiries from existing as well as new customers.’

Skanem Liverpool has recently completed an environmental project focussed around the disposal of waste products from its manufacturing process. A new bailing system has been installed at site and the return and re-use of all ink, varnish and chemistry containers has also been introduced, both internally and with supply partners.

The final quality audit from one of our key customers has now been completed. Skanem Bangkok was approved at the first round and the new site is now ready to start preparation for production! This is great news for Managing Director Alf Møller and his team in Bangkok. Alf Møller says: ‘To pass the quality audit has been our goal since we started up. This is a milestone and a great achievement from the team here in Bangkok and we are now looking forward to start production!'

LaBella Packaging and Labeling System 1.0 is the complete name of the machine that Marcus Persson, Managing Director at Skanem Systems AB, calls purely an engineering piece of art. What is unique about LaBella is that it labels and packages in a very compact space. In total the machine takes up no more than four square meters.

Skanem Willich has now qualified their three 100% video inspection systems. The Nikka C2 systems are installed on each of the Rotoflex rewinders. The inspection can be used for maximum web width of 410 mm at a slitting speed of more than 250 m/min.
